ANTICIPATING THE PENTECOST DURING THE PANDEMIC

Posted on November 25, 2020 at 11:45 PM

Psalms of hope during the Pandemic

In Psalm 41 we see that it is written by someone who has experienced the presence of God in the Temple in Jerusalem; he remembers the excitement of being close to God through His temple, and it creates a deep ache and a sense of loss because he is not there any more:

Psalm 41 (42)

As the deer longs for the springs of waters,

So my soul longs for You, O God.

3 My soul thirsts for the living God;

When shall I come and appear before the face of God?

4 My tears w ere m y bread day and night,

When they said to m e each day, “Where is y our God?”

5 I remembered these things, and poured out m y soul within me;

For I shall enter the place of the wondrous tabernacle, even the house of God,

To celebrate a festival with a voice of great joy and praise.

6 Why are you so sad, O my soul? And why do you trouble me?

Hope in God, for I will give thanks to Him;

My God is the salvation of my countenance.

We see that the writer is deeply depressed, but not despaired. The writer is thirsty for God, like a deer in the desert; he finds himself in tears twenty four hours a day; his memory of happier times makes him more sad, but also want God more. But, what the writer of the Psalm does is, he is engaging in an inner dialogue, in a prayer, and by doing that he is growing stronger: Why are you so sad, o my soul? Hope in God, for I will give thanks to Him.

Then, he remembers what it was being in the presence of God, or rather, he puts himself in the presence of God:

7 My soul within me was troubled;

Therefore I will remember You

From the land of the Jordan and Hermon,

From the small mountain.

8 Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls;

All Your waves and billows went over me.

9 By day the Lord shall command His mercy,

And by night His ode will be with me,

A prayer to the God of my life.

10 I will say to God, “You are my protector. Why have You forgotten me?

Why do I go about with a sad face w hen m y enemies afflict me?”

11 Those w ho afflict me revile me when they break my bones,

When they speak to me each day, saying, “Where is y our God?”

12 Why are you so sad, O my soul? And why do you trouble me?

Hope in God, for I will give thanks to Him.

My God is the salvation of my countenance.

He is long way away from Jerusalem – in the Land of Jordan or up on Mount Hermon. He knows that the Lord is always with him, and he can pray to the Lord, but he feels a long way away. Being challenged from all sides of life, and taunted by his enemies with the apparent lack of any evidence for the presence of God, nevertheless, he remains faithful to God, he longs to be back in Jerusalem where he can sense God’s presence and grace, where everyone is caught up with worship and adoration, but it is in times like this that he reminds himself of hope.

Psalm 42 (43)

Judge me, O God, and pass judgment in my cause against an unholy nation;

Deliver me from the unjust and deceitful man.

2 For You, O God, are my strength;

Why do You cast me off?

Why do I go about with a sad face when my enemy afflicts me?

3 Send out Your light and Your truth;

They guided me and led me to Your holy mountain

And to Your tabernacles.

4 And I will come to the altar of God,

To the God who makes glad my youth;

I will give thanks to You with the lyre, O God, my God.

5 Why are you so sad, O my soul? And why do you trouble me?

Hope in God, for I will give thanks to Him;

My God is the salvation of my countenance.

The writer appears powerless in his own eyes and before his enemies, and God seems to have abandoned him. It is at his lowest point that he turns to pray the greater prayer (42:3): the prayer for God’s light and truth to come and find him, to lead him back to the very presence of God so that he can praise God once more. Light and truth is what you need not only when your intellect is curious and needs stimulating, but when your whole being is lost, downcast, depressed, thirsty for God.

We now know that it is the faith and cry like the one of the Psalmist that led to God’s dwelling among us, His Resurrection, and the ultimate comfort through His Holy Spirit, Who is the Comforter and the Spirit of Truth! We know that God is with us!

In these trying times of the Corona Virus, we too are invited to exclaim with the Psalmist: Why are you so sad, O my soul? Hope in God, for I will give thanks to Him.

Message from Gracanica Church Board President, Vladimir Pribojan

Posted on June 17, 2020 at 11:00 PM

Everything we say as Orthodox, we do with conviction, honour and honesty.

Brothers and sisters, today I address you as President of the Church Board with love and care.

To all Christians and Orthodox confessions, the Serbian people, Patriarch Irinej, bishops, priests, monks, diaconates, and our brothers who defend our Serbian homeland.

CHRIST IS RISEN! INDEED HE IS RISEN!

We live in a time full of challenges and trials. I would like Easter to be a holiday that symbolizes hope and faith for the future of our real values. To direct our focus to our families, friends, love, peace and harmony. Doing good for others is the best way to do good for ourselves. Our community is built on good relationships and the hard work of our elderly with genuine attention and care. It will continue to prosper as we continue to come together, shoulder to shoulder with our brothers and sisters for future generations. This work is embedded deep in the history of our Church Gracanica that we must follow. The risen Lord defeated the invincible, and each of our own diligent, conformist and persistence can win all problems that seem unresolved. With the help of our mother Church, I'm confident that we will continue to persevere.

Let Easter in our homes bring good health, happiness and the joy of living. Let it show us the way of salvation for all trials we have been through and let it surround us with the ones we hold closest to our hearts. May you feel the hope of new beginnings during this joyful Easter holiday and may your life be full of blessings.

CHRIST IS RISEN !

Yours truly,

Vladimir Pribojan

TETA DJUJA KRICKIC RETIREMENT LUNCHEON POSTPONED

Posted on April 20, 2020 at 11:25 AM

Out of an abundance of caution regarding the coronavirus, the Serbian Centre Board of Directors and Management along with Teta Djuja and her family have agreed to postpone the luncheon that was scheduled for this Sunday March 15th until further notice.

The health and safety of our community members, Serbian Centre staff and other guests is our top priority, and for that reason postponing Sunday’s event is the most responsible thing we can do at this time.

Please help us by informing others who may not receive this message online, of our decision.

Notice will be sent out to the community when the event is rescheduled, sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Thanks,

CHURCH MAINTENANCE - BELL TOWER AND PARKING LOT

Posted on October 8, 2019 at 10:55 AM

Continuing with the maintenance and upkeep of our Gracanica Church, more renovations and upgrades were recently completed.

The Bell Tower restoration, in it’s second week, had a few rainy days and wind disruptions which delayed the completion until Friday. This week, repairs to the lower copper roofing will commence.

Those who attended services this weekend, saw other repairs and renovations which were completed. The parking lot was completely overhauled, repaved and new lines painted, while the grass area was cleared and gravel placed. The lamp posts and railing around the church were also painted.

Thank you to all those who gave their time, efforts and support to help with repairs around the church. We are blessed to have so many parishioners who volunteer their time working towards the betterment of our Gracanica Church and Community.

CHURCH SLAVA 2019

Posted on September 5, 2019 at 12:25 AM

_____________________________

On Wednesday, August 28, on the Feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, His Grace Dr. Mitrofan Bishop of Canada visited the faithful in Windsor on the occasion of Gracanica Windsor’s church Slava. On this occasion he served the Holy Pontifical Liturgy together with Protopresbyter-Stavrofor Božo Bakajlić, Protopresbyter-Stavrofor Rade Obsenica, Protobresbyter-Stavrofor George Sandulescu (Romanian Church), Protopresbyter John Ayub (Antiochian Church), Protopresbyter Evangelos Aravantinos (Greek Church) as well as Protonamesnik Vladimir Vranic, the parish priest at Gracanica Windsor. To the great joy of the host and the people in Windsor, the liturgical celebration was also attended by Mr. Vasilije Petković, Consul General of the Republic of Serbia in Toronto.

Just before the beginning of the Holy Liturgy Mr. Brian Payne was ordained by His Grace into the rank of reader, which was a touching and unique act for many in attendance, all the more so as it was the first time in Windsor to perform the act of tonsuring or ordaining to any ecclesiastical level. The hope is that not only the beauty of this act, but also the sacred service itself, will be exemplary for future generations from this region to direct their interests to the service of God through His Church.

The special joy of this magnificent day was the children who literally filled the altar and the whole church. A great number of children and the faithful received Holy Communion and welcomed and celebrated this great holiday in a dignified and beautiful way.

After the Ambon Prayer there was a Traditional Procession of three turns around the Church and upon returning into the Church, His Grace cut the Slava Kolach and blessed the Zito (wheat). Each year, the congregation at Gracanica Windsor wants to highlight the most exemplary believers in the Church, and this year the blessing has been bestowed upon the sponsors (kumovi) of this year's Slava, John and Zorka Brujić. There was particular joy in that the entire Brujić family was present and took an active part in celebrating this great day for our Church and our community. The granddaughters of the sponsors (kumovi) of the Church Slava, Nadia and Ileana read the Epistle beautifully in Serbian and English. According to the wonderful custom, the sponsors of this great holiday for last year Jovan and Janja Urukalo, as well as for the following year Gruja and Jagoda Stevanov, were present in the Church with this year's sponsors Jovan and Zorka Brujić. May the Lord graciously pour out a blessing on them for they set a wonderful example of love for worship, the Church and the community to younger generations.

After the Dismissal, Bishop Mitrofan delivered an inspiring sermon teaching about the magnitude of today's holiday, but also the marvelous personality and importance of the Most Holy Mother of God, especially her role as a mother in our lives. This was followed, for the first time in the Church, by the awarding of diplomas to the graduates of the Gracanica Windsor Church School, with the blessing of Bishop Mitrofan, and with the message that it is the hope of exceptional and very dedicated teachers at the church school that the students will always have in their thoughts this blessing today and that looking at their diplomas they will always know where they have grown up spiritually and where their spiritual and religious roots are. In addition to their diplomas this year, the students each received one cross, Blessing from the Krka Monastery, which was specially brought back and donated for this occasion by Janja Urukalo from her travels in the Old Country.

In the evening, there was a traditional Slava banquet, a true table of love, at the Serbian Center. To general delight, again for the first time this year, the program was opened by the students who were awarded diplomas for successful attendance and graduation from the Church School. In their touching speeches, they emphasized the positive experiences that they had in Church School, which was a kind of invitation to their younger friends and parents not to miss the opportunity to be part of this important institution. The program was led with dignity by Tina Dukić, and on this occasion there were also brief appropriate speeches by: the President of the Gracanica Windsor church-school congregation Mr. Vladimir Pribojan, this year's sponsors Mr. Jovan and Mrs. Zorka Brujić, the Consul General of the Republic of Serbia in Toronto Mr. Vasilije Petković and Protonamesnik Vladimir Vranić. Afterwards while the Reverend Bishop Mitrofan took the floor, he once again recalled the significance of the feast of the Mother of God and blessed this and every blessed assembly in the name of God and the glory and honor of His saints.

It is important to note that a book has been released in print on the occasion of the parish's 50th anniversary. A copy was given to the Reverend Bishop Mitrofan, Mr. Vasilije Petković, Consul General of the RS in Toronto, as well as to the Boards of the Church-School Congregations in Windsor of Gracanica and Sv. Dimitrije.

The banquet was followed by an invitation to all attendees to visit the newly-opened exhibition marking the 800th anniversary of the Autocephaly of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the Serbian Heritage Museum in Windsor, the only Serbian museum of its kind in the area.

On this occasion, we would like to thank God first for His mercy and for all the gifts and more, but also to all who, by their presence, have magnified the joy of our community, and thus have beautified the celebration of the Church Slava in honor of the Most Holy Mother of God.

We thank Alexander Media NEWS / Canada for professional technical support.

We pray to the Lord Giver of all goodness to always look graciously upon our community and upon all people of good will, with the prayers of His Most Holy Mother and of all the saints.

Protonamesnik Vladimir Vranić

LAZARUS SATURDAY / VRBICA

Posted on April 6, 2019 at 12:10 AM

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

We are already in the fourth week of the Great and Holy Lent. This is a gentle reminder that the schedule of the church services for the month of April and Easter can be found on our church's website, or you may obtain a hard copy next time you come for a service. We urge you to try to attend as many services as possible, so that you may be with your Lord during the days, as He, voluntarily, is undergoing suffering on the Cross so that, with Him, you may also enter into the joy of His and our Resurrection.

We use this opportunity to invite all our church school children and their parents to take part in the great Feast of the resurrection of Lazarus (Lazarus' Saturday) and the royal entry of Christ into Jerusalem.

Lazarus' Saturday, or Vrbica, is celebrated the day before Palm Sunday, which always falls on the sixth week of the Great Lent. It is dedicated to the resurrection of the four-day Lazarus, and the entry of Christ to Jerusalem. At His entry, the children welcomed and greeted Him solemnly.

At Orthodox vesper services on this Holy day, young willow branches are brought into the church. After the blessing of the willow branches, the priest distributes these to the congregation, who form a procession with church banners, fans, and candles. The people then walk around the church three times singing the troparion of Lazarus' Saturday.

This holiday especially, is a holiday of children. For that day, the children come dressed in particularly nice clothes and wear bells around their necks attached to the three coloured ribbon or trobojka. Children rejoice and take part in the procession around the church. The blessed willow branches are brought home and placed next to the Slava icon and candle.

Voluntarily, with this holiday, the great Easter holidays begin.

Please, join us for this Great Feast and bring your children to welcome our Lord as He enters Jerusalem.
